About Belfast

The Port of Belfast is Ireland's major gateway to Europe, handling more than 60 per cent of Northern Ireland and 25 per cent of the whole of Ireland sea borne trade - in 1999 receiving some 9,000 vessels.

More than 80 weekly ferry sailings connect with UK ports. The three ferry services are Stena Line's HSS service to Stranraer, Merchant Ferries' ro-ro operation linking with Heysham and the Norse Irish Ferries route to Liverpool.

With almost two million passengers and half a million freight units annually Belfast is Ireland's busiest ferry port. It is also Ireland's leading dry bulk port, dominating the market with regard to imports of grain and animal feeds, coal, fertilisers and cement, and exports of scrap and aggregates. Over 95% of Northern Ireland's petroleum and oil products are also handled at the Port.
