About Toberonochy (Luing)

The sheltered conservation village beside Kilchattan Bay was once a thriving quarrying community. The pier was built to enable the slates to be shipped all over the country. The quarry produced some 50,000 slates a week for the Glasgow market. Production ceased in 1914 with the First World War and subsequent attempts to re-open to quarry failed. The harbour walls were built from slates and hints at Toberonochy's past. A deep, former slate quarry is situated just behind the harbour.
